Wine Profile

Ratings 91 Points - James Suckling
Vineyard Notes Mitsuko's Vineyard is 365 acres in the Los Carneros appellation within the Napa Valley. The rolling land of this vineyard has a broad range of soil types, elevations, slopes, and aspects which create countless distinct microclimates. After careful study, eight different grape varieties were planted at this vineyard utilizing every bit of its diversity. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are commonly found in Los Carneros and are the keys to the region’s notoriety. In Mitsuko’s Vineyard these varieties receive ideal cooling breezes blowing in from the San Pablo Bay which create the slow, balanced growing season these varieties need to build complexity. The vineyard takes its name from founder Jan Shrem’s late wife with whom he became devoted to building Clos Pegase winery and making it an iconic destination in Napa Valley.
Production Notes 1st Bottling
Winemaker Notes Whole cluster pressed to minimize phenolic extraction, the juice was cold settled and fermented in stainless steel at cool temperatures to preserve freshness and aromatics. Following primary fermentation, the wine was prepared for tirage and bottled for secondary fermentation. The wine was aged en tirage for 24 months, allowing for autolytic development and integration. After aging, the bottles were disgorged, dosed, and finished prior to release, resulting in a refined balance of freshness and complexity.
Food Pairing Notes This versatile sparkling wine pairs well with a variety of dishes! We highly recommend trying it with sashimi, including cuts such as maguro, jisaba, unagi, and o-toro.
Other Notes A wet start to the year helped recharge the soil moisture profiles in all our vineyards, delivering much needed relief to all regions. Cool conditions persisted throughout the spring, with overcast weather during flowering that resulted in lowering yields. This was followed by cool temperatures leading into early summer which further delayed fruit development. Conditions gradually improved as we entered summer, with warmer temperatures encouraging the vineyards to “catch up” from the sluggish start. Warm and dry weather throughout harvest meant the grapes could be given sufficient time to stay on the vine and develop the intense flavors we look for.
