Clos Pegase '21 Napa Valley Pegaso Mixed Red
42% Petit Verdot, 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Syrah
Dark purple in the glass, the wine displays vibrant aromas of cracked pepper, a touch of plum, cocoa and espresso bean. On the palate, the bold tannins support a dark fruit core of black cherry with ripe plum alongside more integrated notes of cigar leaf, cedar and baker's spice. Texturally soft, the smooth acidity delivers a silky palate and delicious finish.
Each block hand harvested individually and brought to the winery where the clusters were sorted again before being destemmed, with 50% crushed and 50% whole berries in the fermentation. The must was then allowed 2-4 days cold soak followed by a warm fermentation using a veriety of different yeast strains. With two pumpovers a day the wine was only pressed off the skins when dry. It was then sent to barrel to undergo malolactic fermentation. Once this was complete it was racked one more time and then allowed to rest in barrel for 24 months in our caves. When the wine was ready it was gently filtered and bottled.
Clos Pegase has always been known for its great estate grown and bottled wines. The "Estate" designation means that the wines are made exclusively from grapes grown in our own vineyards and under our control. This requires a significant investment of time and money in vineyard management, but results in a higher level of quality that clearly comes through in the final wine. At Clos Pegase we have 450 acres in Napa Valley made up of four vineyards, each with unique characteristics that bring out the very best of the grapes we grow each vintage. By working with these same four vineyards over the decades we have gotten to know the nuances that can be brought out in each wine leading to an unmatched style and level of quality.
